Wait until you are alone or with other friends to let out your regrets. Crying only makes them feel guilty and at best will drive a wedge further between you. The majority of the time, the one initiating the break really does keep your best interests at heart and they may truly feel that you deserve better or at least, someone who can love you like they cannot. So, try to take things and keep things in as good a light as possible. Who knows, your mature and rational reaction may just impress them and make them think they made a mistake...
2) Running off of "keep your cool" the next thing would be that you need to find out why you split in the first place. Knowing the reason(s) for breaking up is the single most important thing you can do. If you know why he/she ditched you, then there may be something you can do to fix it. Perhaps you have gotten a little too comfortable in your relationship and you haven't taken her on a date in over a year. Maybe you have let yourself go and all of the Sundays watching football with your buddies have caused your midsection to sag a bit. Perhaps you are spending more flippantly than you used to and they want someone who is more financially stable. The reasons are endless; you absolutely must know why you broke up in the first place.
3) Now you must determine if you even want them back. Why do you want them back? Were they right to judge the relationship as they saw? Are there some things you need to change to win them back? If you just cannot stop thinking about them and you do find yourself wanting them back more and more you need to show them that you are still that person they fell in love with. Wear that perfume or cologne they bought for you on Valentines' day. Dig out that suit she bought you for your birthday. Wear that blouse you got for Christmas. Show them you are the person they fell in love with and that you are willing to, at least, adjust your thinking.
