How Can I Tell How Much Hair I'm Shedding? Do I Count It?
I recently recently received correspondence from someone who asked
, in part: "I'm always reading that you really shouldn't beshedding more than 100 hairs per day. But, how do people know if they are losing more or less hairs than this? Are people counting their hairs and if so, how do they do this? It seems like it would be an impossible task." I will try to address these questions in the following article.
Some People Do Count Their Shed Hairs In A Variety Of Ways: The way that many people know how many hairs they are losing is that they count them. Yes, I know this sounds crazy. I have to admit that I used to do this because I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with. And, if I was losing excessive amounts of hair, I wanted to be able to qualify by how much.
So, I would gather the hairs from the showerdrain after I shampooed my hair. I would clean my brush or comb before I used it and then collect what had pulled out afterward. I would also style my hair over the sink so that I could pick up what had fallen out. And, I would collect what Ifound on my clothing. I would put all of this in a little zip lock back and then count itall up at the end of theday. I know this sounds crazy and I'm not particularly proud of it. But I believe this is how most people are able toknowan estimate of how much hair they are shedding or losing.
To avoid having to do all ofthis throughout the day, some people will just try brushing their hair until strands stop falling out and will get their daily count that way.
Once You Have An Initial Count Of The Average Amount Of Hair That You're Losing, I'd SuggestingNot Continuing To Count:I have to tell you that counting hairs can become a very destructive habit. If you have a good day, you might be walking on air.But if you have a bad day, this really could negatively affect you even even ifeverything else is going fine. Not only that, but if you are trying different treatments, you should know that they may take a while to work or to show you positive results. But if you are counting excessively, this might create too much anxiety for you to really relax and let a treatment have a fair chance.
Once you've counted a few times, you get a sense of what 50,100,150, or more spent hairs should look like. After a very short amount of time, you should be able to just take a quick look each time you shampoo, brush, style, etc. and know right away if you're seeing an improvement or not. Basically, you should no longer need to count to know if the amount of spend or fallen hairs is excessive. There's really no advantage to having an exact number.
Essentially, the important questions are whether your hair loss is excessive and whether it's improving or getting worse. You really don't need to count or to have a precise number in order to figure this out.
How do I know this? Because I lived it. The habit of counting hairs was very destructive and thankfully, eventually got old. Over time, I become serious figuring out why my hair was falling out rather than wasting time counting it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I looked at my triggers, my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp. It was a long, hard, frustrating journey which all but wrecked my self esteem but I finally found something that helped quite a bit. You can read a You can read a
