How Can Leaders Crush Corruption?

Corruption is an extremely relevant problem in todays society

. You could argue that corruption is a problem that has existed as long as money and power has, however in recent times we have seen such progress in some developed countries, that sets an example to the rest of the world, and suggests methods and tips leaders can use to reduce corruption.

There are several main arenas in which corruption is an issue;

The first arena is the political arena. Politicians don't necessarily have to be wealthy individuals, but it is the decision making power that they have that gives them the income-incentive to become corrupt. Businesses and individuals wishing special privileges, or certain laws to be passed, blocked or repealed may lobby politicians in a very respectable manner, however at some point, a line is crossed, and the methods they employ to get what they want becomes outright illegal and a negative burden on society.

As we have seen from the current geo-political statuses of nations, democracies are the most economically stable countries, with the highest GDP per person. These are also the countries with typically the lowest levels of corruption as measured by various indexes including the 'Corruption Perception Index'.

This scoring system is naturally based off surveys and opinions that have been aggregated, and therefore they're not rock-solid measures of corruption, however due corruptions very nature - a true picture will never be available, and therefore this is the closest we have to an indication.

The current index for 2009 shows, as you would expect, that the scandavian and western European countries have among the highest scores (high score means lower corruption) whereas African nations and emerging economies have lower scores.

A leader may take from this, that they have no power over the corruption that goes on around them, and that the simple solution for corruption is to make the economy growth, and therefore efforts should concentrate on that. However I would disagree. Corruption is a cultural phenomenon, and it is true that there are countries in the world with larger economies than others, but a worse corruption score.

This shows that leaders do have the power to decrease corruption, and here is a simple method as to how:

Leaders should take a zero-tolerance policy on corruption. Corruption only persists in countries, because enough individuals are complicit in it. This means that for every corrupt politicians, there are tens or hundreds of individuals who are aware of the corruption but do nothing to stop it, or worse, are complicit in it. This attitude must be turned around at a local level by leaders taking an open, fair and transparent approach to their personal conduct, and encourage others to challenge their integrity, such that they will pick this up as a habit and also challenge the integrity of other leaders.
