How Cognitive Processing Training Improves Academic Performance
There are many children that have to work extra hard to achieve the same results as another child of the same age, instruction and intelligence
. What is the difference? Why is learning easier for one child but difficult for another, when all the other contributing factors seem equal? The answer is often underdeveloped cognitive skills.
We all have a degree of cognitive functioning. Cognitive functioning develops from childhood as we use our begin to use our sensory and motor skills to: solve problems, read, comprehend, remember and recall, just to name a few. As a student cognitive functioning determines:
how fast we can read and comprehend
how well we can concentrate and focus
if we can follow a series of steps or instructions such as a word math problem
how well our memory functions
how fast we can perform a task without errors
how often we make careless errors
how well we can perform multiple tasks
Let"s compare two students with all factors being equal: the same age, intelligence, instruction, support, and good health. Our first child is a highly motivated student, but works extra hard to keep up with the rest of his class. This child will work extra hard, sacrificing other important activities with friends and family, just to achieve average grades. At first glance, we would not think of this motivated child as having a learning disability. In fact, we often commend a child like this for working so hard.
In contrast, our next child wants to succeed as much as the first child, but has failed time and time again. Our second child is failing to keep up with his class, lacks the motivation, has difficultly with concentration, and continues further down the road of frustration and failure each day. Most of us would quickly label this child as having a serious learning disability.
However, as odd as it may seem, it is probable that both of the children mentioned above have learning disabilities. The first child has just learned how to cope with the disability by sacrifice and working extra hard. Learning does not have to hard and consuming all of a child"s energies. A child who is working fast and efficiently can learn any subject without struggling. The development of cognitive skills lies at the core of a child's success or failure.
Fortunately, cognitive processing skills can be developed through training. There are good cognitive training products available for parents and teachers to train children at home and at school. There are specific exercises and techniques that can train children to work and process information faster and easier. This is done through intense cognitive training.
