Imagine you are in your first class session of the day when your stomach starts to growl and ache in the quiet room. Now, not only is your focus disrupted, but you are starting to feel flush in the face as other students look your way. You remember opting to brush your teeth and put a clean shirt on instead of eating some cereal-you didn't have time this morning for everything. Your alarm clock had tried to wake you several times, but by the time you got up, you were running seriously late. And now, unfortunately, you can't concentrate on the notes you should be taking for the mid-term exam because all you can think about is food. Well, food and the slight embarrassment from your rather noisy stomach. Winston Churchill said "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference," and it is certainly true. Think about it for a moment-every person is a product of his own choices, is he not? And choices are driven by attitudes. For example, when we snooze an alarm, the choice is driven by our attitude in the moment. When we snooze an alarm for longer than we should, many of us are late for our first obligations of the day, whether it is class or work. And in trying to make up for time spent "snoozing," we might make more choices, like skipping a meal or putting off an errand. These choices come back to haunt us. We end up spending money on vending machine snacks that aren't filling, racking up fees from the library, or not having a dry-cleaned suit in time for the big meeting. Fortunately, not all of the choices we make hurt our nutrition, put us in debt, or put our professional appearance at risk. Many college students make choices every day to complete course work before hanging out, to exercise and eat nutritious foods, to start studying for exams before the night before the test. These types of choices impact us as much as the others. Naturally, people want to make positive choices. A positive choice-making ability stems from a positive attitude. In fact, a positive attitude helps attract all that is helpful and good towards you. If you want proof, find someone who enjoys her life fully. Ask her about positivity, and I bet you discover she possesses a lot of it. The most successful people who truly enjoy their lives make a habit of thinking positively. No man was ever elected to office who didn't think he could do it deep down; there has never been a woman who didn't believe in herself who was promoted to the CEO position of a company; there isn't a goal scored on the soccer field that isn't already thought of as being achieved by the player or the coach. Your goals, too, will come, and probably come easier, once you start taking a conscious role in your attitude. Using Positive Thinking to Achieve Goals Start small. Many people overlook the small areas of their daily lives and relationships when trying to focus on the stresses of life as a student. Don't fall prey to prioritizing your self out of your life. There is no material object or grade more important than a clear mind, a healthy body, and well-being. Your goals will be automatically achieved when you start noticing and applying positive thinking in the small spaces of your life. Don't sweat the upsets:Remember, success and failure are just two sides of the coin. Something that might seem like a major problem today, might look smaller tomorrow. Whether the problem is major or minor, it doesn't make sense to add to your stress level by fixating on an outside problem you can't change or control. Instead, focus on what you can always control: your attitude. Thinking positively will help keep your mind focused on your goal without getting bogged down with unnecessary stress. Attitudes are connected to stress-if you have a positive attitude, you will feel less stressed. Many people often find that with positive thinking to guide decision-making, a major problem today will get solved on its own in some time. As the saying goes, "Everything will be okay in the end"-we just have to remember that "if it's not okay [right now], then it's not the end." Be careful not to classify things sharply: It is unhelpful to form strong and definite opinions about people and situations. People and circumstances are always affected by much more than any one person can see or know. Instead of supporting someone or some idea without investigating it, take conscious note of where your opinions lie and then learn more. Instead of being critical of someone or some idea based on past experiences or fear of the unknown, try to discover redeeming qualities. Something that appears as a threat to you today might actually be a disguised opportunity. Share yourself: Sharing a positive outlook helps build strong connections with the people in your life. But it is not always easy to see a silver lining and it can be hard to feel positive the instant you receive unexpected news or experience and upset. Sharing yourself, even when you aren't feeling positive, and allowing others to support and help you by providing their own positivity is essential to stress control. By controlling stress, you can help keep yourself positive. When you feel that you are part of a team or a family, any failures you encounter are collective. In the same manner, the success you achieve is also due to a collective effort. Recognizing this effort and acknowledging the people in your life will help you start feeling more relaxed and accepted. Learn to wait: Things always take their own time. It is hard to be fully appreciative about the present moment if your mind is constantly on some distant future. Just as you cannot force the next day to come sooner, it is no use fretting about money and expected rewards. Instead, live in the present and enjoy the ride! You will never get to relive today. There will never be another moment exactly like the one you are in now. Appreciating the uniqueness of each day and each moment will help you stop wishing for next week, next month, next year. We create our futures the way we want them to be by making choices in the here and now. How we live our days is how we live our lives. Open up to owning up: Everyone makes mistakes. But unfortunately, not everyone takes responsibility for them. Be different. Take responsibility for your mistakes. Once you discover you have made a mistake, acknowledge that mistake-whether it is to a classmate, to a teacher, a coworker, or a boss. The more you recognize and acknowledge your own mistakes, the more understanding people will be of you. A person who is able to admit a mistake and commit to fixing it is more appealing to teachers, to bosses, and even to family and friends. Creating a habit of acknowledging your own mistakes and working through them will also help you be more positive with other people's mistakes. Proving that you are willing to grow and give things a try can have a grater impact than trying to persuade others that you are without failings or mistakes. It's also an easier task to accomplish. Being open to your mistakes and working past them will add to your happiness and joy. Positive thinking has many uses and benefits for all the areas of life. Being a student is just one role in your complex life. Learning to be positive as a student can help you to be positive in the other roles your take on. A positive mind is able to deal with problems in the right manner and arrive at more creative solutions easily.
