How Coriolis Meters Differ From Other Flow Products

Unless you work in the process industry, there is a good chance that you have no knowledge of what coriolis flow meters are or even what they do

. More commonly known as a mass flow meter, these flow meters are used to measure how much liquid is flowing through a tube at any given point in time.

Unlike other mass flow meters, the Coriolis meter measures only the mass and not the volume of the fluid as it passes through the tube. Measurements are taken using the Coriolis effect.

In order to explain this process in general terms, we will use the idea of a garden hose that has been twisted to form a loop and the liquid in this example will be plain water. As the water runs through the hose and the loop of the hose is swung back and forth the opposite forces of the water running away from your hands as well as the hose swinging will actually cause the hose to twist.

In coriolis flow meters the theory is still the same but the process itself is a little different. Instead of literally forcing the hose or pipe to swing back and forth, the swinging motion is generated by vibrating the tube that the fluid is required to pass through.

Over time the design of these flow meters has changed drastically. Earlier models were created using a single tube with a u-shaped design, like in our garden hose example. The main problem with this design is that the results were easily affected by the smallest of vibrations, even if the flow meter itself wasn't overly large.

In order to resolve this issue, later designs split the flow into two streams and the measurement was achieved by calculating the twist between the two tubes. This design was less likely to be affected by vibration and allowed it to be installed in standard piping systems without having to add on additional mechanical supports to hold the device in place.

Unlike other flow meters, the coriolis flow meters can measure the mass flow of a variety of different substances, with water, acid, caustic materials, chemicals and gases being some of the most common. These meters are known to provide accurate measurements which are not affected by density changes so they are most widely used for the measurement of high value products, but caution needs to be taken when it comes to measuring gas vapors.

Unlike liquids, the flow rates of gases tend to be much lower than with liquids, and any unexpected pressure drops can have a negative effect on the accuracy of the measurements that the device provides. This problem can be remedied by paying particular attention to the design of the piping that is directly up and downstream from the flow meter.

While this may be a deterrent to some, the advantages well outweigh the negatives of these flowmeters. These meters can measure mass flow rates directly, without having to compensate for changes in temperature or viscosity. Just as long as attention is paid to the installation of the piping as well as the meter, the coriolis flow meters can potentially deliver highly accurate results for many years to come.
