How Cosmetology Wages Are Determined

A cosmetologist is someone who provides services in the skin

, nail, hair and beauty departments. Wages for a cosmetologist most certainly depend on one?s area of expertise. Cosmetologists include shampooers, makeup artists, manicurists and pedicurists, aestheticians, nail technicians and hair stylists just to name a few. A professional license is mandatory and the cosmetology wages will fluctuate depending on the chosen industry, location of the position, and opportunities for self-employment.

Spas and beauty salons are the two of the places where cosmetologists work, and around 90% of them are employed in one of these two settings. The median salary for these cosmetologists is around $26,950 per year, whereas choosing to work in a department store would drop the median income to only $20,240 annually. The highest being earned currently, no surprise, is by the elite few who work in the entertainment and film industry. These cosmetologists make a whopping $61,370 each year. Working in a respectable salon, it is very easy to raise a yearly salary, as tips become a huge part of the wages.

Hawaii is currently a hot spot for cosmetologists to work, as the average pay there is over $40,000 per year. However, many metropolitan areas raise the bar and pay their cosmetologists over $43,000 per year on average. On the other end of the spectrum, coming in at just above $14,000 per year on average is Texas, home of the lowest wages for cosmetologists in the country.

Having experience and a following of loyal customers could turn out to be very lucrative for someone in the cosmetology business. Becoming self-employed is obviously a risk, as one is then responsible for paying the expenses, but setting your own prices and having low-overhead will make it much easier to turn a profit.

Cosmetology is an industry that accounts for over 70 billion dollars and has stood out to be almost recession-proof in this tough economy. With a wide variety of available jobs and the skills in demand across the country, both part time and full time positions can easily be found. The type of location, specific state employed in and possible opportunities for self-employment, cosmetology is an ever growing field.
