How Could A Credit Card Save You Money On Bills?

Bills, bills, bills, as Destiny's Child, have it

, if you don't pay them you're a triflin',good for nothing type of brother so how can one escape Beyonce's ire?

One way is to save money on bills using certain credit cards.

For example, energy behemoth British Gas, is to reward its customer's loyalty when it becomes part of the Nectar rewards scheme at the end of the year. It will replace rival EDF energy as the programme's sole utility provider.

Starting in January 2011, British Gas will begin rewarding customers with points as it seeks to instil a sense of loyalty in a customer base that is increasingly inclined to shop around for the best deals.

The managing director of British Gas, Phil Bentley, has said that while the company recognises that consumers have a choice between providers, the financial benefits of earning points through the Nectar card will encourage customers to stick with British Gas.

British Gas currently has over 12 million customers that could benefit from Nectar card point-collecting. As well as getting points for their everyday energy usage, consumers will also be able to accrue points for things like paying by direct debit or opting to receive their bills online.

When the Nectar programme began in 1993, it was widely criticised as the worst reward scheme available. Nowadays it offers points at a rate of two for every 1 spent. These can be redeemed for about 0.5p per point.

The large number of participating companies in the Nectar card scheme means that rewards can include anything from long-haul holidays to cheap fuel. Businesses currently taking part in the scheme include Eurostar, BP,Vue Cinemas, Expedia, Hertz, Homebase and Sainsbury's.

Shoppers who already make use of the Nectar card in Sainsbury's are exclusively given the chance to apply for a Sainsbury's credit card for Nectar cardholders. The card offers two year-long interest free periods for balance transfers and on purchases which makes it competitive in any credit card comparison and certainly when compared with other instant decision credit cards.

As Tesco shoppers only too well know, the Nectar programme isn't the only scheme to reward customer loyalty.

The Tesco Clubcard is used by more than 35 million shoppers worldwide.

Like its rival, Sainsubury's, Tesco offer a credit card based on the Clubcard. The Tesco Clubcard credit card is notable in that cardholders can earn a point for every 4 they spend, no matter where they spend it. This is in addition to the normal two points that their Tesco-spent pound earns them and Tesco provides many utilities such as broadband which can be paid for using these points.

Many of these reward cards exist for different energy suppliers but they are almost never bad credit rating credit cards.
