A group of historians believe that the city got its name from Dilli', an altered form of dehleez' or dehali', which means threshold' in Urdu. Delhi acted as a gateway to the Gangetic Plain of the country.

There are evidences of human habitation during the second millennium BC in and around Delhi or at least the 6th century BC. The city of Indraprashtha of Mahabharata' is believed to be the present Delhi. Remains of at least seven major cities have been discovered in this capital city of India.
