How Designers Have Made Glass Panels A Key Aspect Of An Office Design

Designing a modern office means more than just organising the furniture

, but also maximising space and light. Amongst the most utilised components are glass panels, which no longer serve just practical roles but are now also manipulated to benefit the interior design. Of course, when partitioning systems are made of glass, there are some efficiency and safety issues to be decided upon, such as whether to use single glazed or double glazed glass. But with new rooms created by walls of glass, areas segregated by glass screens, and existing rooms halved by glass wall dividers, it is clear that glass is more significant than ever before. As with all kinds of office and room dividers, UK designers now look for more than just practical applications for every material. So, just as a solid panel might sport some art or a clock, office interior designers have identified ways that glass can be used to enhance the overall design of the office. This directly relates to the glass used in the panels, and what effects they feature. Clear Glass This is probably the most common glazing choice, and certainly the most basic. The lack of any kind of design means that there is a clear view of everything that goes on in an office or meeting room. The reason why clear glass is chosen can be budgetary but is usually down to a desire to maintain an unconfined office. Depending on the dimensions of the office floor plan, even by frosting a panel, the area can seem to have shrunk. Of course, natural light can spill into the room without any hindrance, which is a plus. Tinted Glass Tinting the glass in panels has two purposes. Firstly, and most obviously, the tint removes any glare that might be created by sunlight through the glass. On hot summer days, when sunlight is strong, this can be a real problem but, with a tint, the strength of the light is diffused somewhat. The second purpose is that it can add some depth to the office design. Green and black tints are two very common options, and in both cases they provide a comparison the open plan of the office. Frosted This is a very common option, and chosen to provide a certain degree of privacy. When important meetings are being held in a boardroom or executive office, there can be a certain amount of distraction caused by people passing by. For those outside, a meeting in full swing can be equally distracting. However, by frosting a section of the glass with frosted film, perhaps through the middle third of the panel, there is a barrier to the view without taking away the benefits of natural light. Dots, Lines and Chequers Clear glass can be a bit boring, and so it is common to decorate the panels with sections of frosted glass. These are usually simple shapes like dots, circles, lines of varying thicknesses that are either horizontal or vertical or diagonal. More complex designs can also be found, like checkered, swirled or hooped shapes. Of course, the company itself may opt to brand the glass by sticking film in the shape of the company logo onto the surface. Scenery Finally, some companies will rather use a theme instead of a logo, though these themes might not necessarily relate directly to the company name. The availability of full colour film means that coloured images can be stuck to the glass. For example, an autumn woodland scene may be stuck to the glass dividers, thereby separating two meeting rooms, and providing an inspirational image as a background. While it is true that the use of glass panels in an office has obvious practical benefits, it is often necessary to decorate them to add some character or to better blend them into the overall office design. Film stuck to the glass is the best way to accomplish this, not just because of the ease with which the images and designs can be applied, but the ease with which they can be removed and changed. When it comes to any kind of room dividers, UK companies are becoming extremely conscious of the design opportunities that exist. Moreover, they are keenly aware of the advantages that large, full coloured scenes and themes on wall dividers can have to staff. Not only can they encourage the imagination, and enhance positivity in the work place, they can also make work a fun place to be.
