How Different Types of Beds Affect The Way You Sleep

By the time old age rolls around, most people will have spent nearly a third of their lives in their beds asleep. With that much physical contact, it's easy to see why it's more than worthwhile for people to go out of their way to invest in a mattress that's going to provide them with the ultimate comfort. In the last few decades, the technology behind many of the materials that go into home bedding have improved dramatically, and if it has been a while since you purchased a new mattress for your bed, it's important to get a feel for what you're looking for.

The most traditional type of mattress used in beds today is the box spring, or "innerspring" variety. It's nothing more than a flexible metal frame filled with a matrix of steel springs. Of course, if you're used to this type of mattress, you know it's easily possible to get some rest on one, but the truth is that it's far from the most comfortable. The springs all exert upward pressure independently of each other, which causes focused pressure on different parts of your body. Over time, this can compromise the depth of your sleep, and can even cause you to wake up with new aches and pains as you age.

In an effort to improve the level of comfort of their traditional innerspring beds, some people have taken to placing a layer of dense foam between their mattress and their bottom sheet. These foam pads range in thickness from 2 to 4 inches, are inexpensive at many commercial outlets, and can provide some degree of enhanced comfort over the mattress by itself. Many people that have switched to this type of padding after going without for years report a pleasant feeling of being able to sink into their mattresses when they lie down, and that it is far easier to get a good night's rest.

Despite their relative expense, a sizable majority of people feel that the best value they can get for their money is to buy beds made from synthetic "memory foam." Instead of just being a thin pad over a box of springs, these modern beds use space-age materials to provide a surface that equalizes pressure over the entire body. The result is that bones and joints no longer have odd and angular pressures exerted on them throughout the night, and the muscles in the body are able to fully relax as you pass into a far deeper sleep than what would be possible with other types of beds.

As time goes on, more and more people are starting to switch to synthetic mattresses. Falling asleep on them is reported to be effortless, and many people that have used them over several years have claimed that they have consistently better energy throughout their working day. Of course, newer and better bedding materials will continue to become available. Take a good look at what you're sleeping on, and ask yourself whether or not you deserve better!
