How Do Dogs Sleep - How Long and How Often

Dogs in general spend approximately half of their lives asleep

, typically twelve hours each day and some breeds may sleep as much as 18 hours per day! So the question is, how do dogs sleep and overall what represents normal sleep for a dog?

Commonly, puppies sleep together. Any dog trying to conserve body heat curls its body. A tightly curled body means that the dog is not sleeping as to sleep the dog has to be relaxed. A dog that sleeps on its back with the feet up in the air is not clowning around to make your day. The dog is trying to cool it's body temperature since the stomach is not covered with such dense hair.

Adult dogs spend around twelve hours sleeping per day, this means approximately half of your pets lives go toward sleep. Puppies spend a longer time sleeping and older less active dogs can be seen sleeping and napping a lot more. It is interesting to note puppies and older dogs experience more dreams than middle aged dogs.

Dog lovers will be aware dogs sleep a lot and it would be difficult to estimate the "normal" sleeping hours of a dog as the amount of time spent sleeping would depend on the age, breed and personality as well as the activities of the dog.

For instance, if your dog is unwell, medicated, stressed, old or showing symptoms, your dog may sleep more than normal. If your dog's sleep is becoming so deep he's not alert to the usual sounds, it's time to get him along to the Vet.

While it's best not to wake the dog from its precious snooze time be aware of any changes in your dog's sleeping habits and start keeping track. Should your dog seem a bit lost or vague and unaware of things which previously used to wake him up take action.

Consider this simple expression while he's sleeping- "let sleeping dogs lie". Seriously, if there's no need to disturb your dog when snoring away, don't do it.

Let him snooze.
