How Do I Choose The Right Database?
When you are in a dilemma about choosing the right database then you should remember that there are four standards that a good database should meet
. Though these four standards are not the only consideration while you are choosing a database, but it is a good method of comparing between databases.
Atomicity: In every modifications of a database a rule is followed. It is known as all or nothing and here all the transactions are atomic. Thus, if one part of any transaction fails then the whole transaction will fail. These atoms cannot be split and thus it is important that the database management system maintains the atomic nature of every transaction no matter whether there is any database, hardware or operating system failure.
Consistency: Always remember that only valid data should be written to a database. Therefore, if for any reason an already executed transaction violates this rule of the database, then the whole transaction should be rolled back and the database should be restored to that state where it was before the violation. Those transactions that do not violate such rules always take a database from one state where it is consistent with the rules to another state where it is also consistent with the rules.
Isolation: In the right database when multiple transactions are carried out at the same time, they do not impact each other. If you have issued a transaction and at the same time another person has also issued a transaction, then both these transactions will be carried out in an isolated manner. Either your transaction will be carried out first or the other persons transactions. Thus none of the transactions would be able to read the immediate data that is produced as a side effect of the other transaction.
Durability: Last but not the least this is another important standard for choosing a database. Durability means that all the transactions carried out on a database are not lost. You would get the database transaction logs which are helpful for restoring the transactions which might get lost during any software or hardware problem. It is important that you choose a database which has a built-in capability so that data loss can be prevented which would help in saving critical data as well as keep the maintenance costs low too. Often the databases do not have durability, the main reason being lack of an effective strategy to deal with random access files which sometimes get corrupted.
