How Do I Conceive After Tubal Ligation?
There are ways for a woman to conceive after tubal ligation, depending on which route she wants to go with. One is a common practice that has a higher success rate while the other has a lower positive result and costs more.
Out of the approximate 700,000 women per year who undergo having their tubes tied as a means of sterilization, about 6 percent of them decide later on that they want to have more children. It could be based strictly on a voluntary decision or it could be as a result of a life event that has occurred that has changed their life in a dramatic way. In either case, there are still possibilities to once again become a parent.
The most common method is to have the tubes reconnected. This comes with a fairly high success rate, approximately 70 percent. The reason is because once the procedure is performed the patient can continue trying to conceive month after month.
There are sometimes complications that can make the results much more difficult to achieve. Many of these relate to the way the initial surgery was conducted and if the doctor took any extra precautions. Since roughly two percent of ligations still result in accidental pregnancies, some doctors will take extra measures to ensure that this does not occur with their patients.
The other method for restoring the woman's ability to have more children is through the process of in vitro fertilization, or IVF. In this instance, the patient is artificially inseminated directly without the need of the tubing. But there are two major drawbacks to this option. One is that is only gives the patient one chance at conception. If this effort fails then it will have to be repeated.
The other problem with this option is price. With costs starting at around $10,000 per episode and higher, it is not a choice that most couples make simply due to the financial strain that is involved. And the fee has to be paid each and every time that the procedure is performed. This is not a viable option for most looking to conceive after tubal ligation.
