How Do I Control Anxiety?

Anxiety can rob you of rewards by causing you not to act in the correct way when trouble comes

. It will always surface in certain situations or conditions by some sort of prearranged mental signal. It is triggered by a past negative event which had an undesirable outcome. The unpleasant outcome causes us to have a reaction that occurs each time a similar problem presents itself to us.

The events which trigger anxiety may be physical, mental, or emotional. A physical trigger may be the threat of attack or bodily harm. I know that I feel fearful each time that I am confronted by an angry dog. I have never been attacked but many dogs have tried. The threat of bodily harm causes me to feel fearful and uneasy. An example of a mental trigger may be the negative effect that a controlling person has on your psyche. Sometimes when we have been subjected to lifelong patterns of control we may not be able to break free of the effects of the control. We may feel distressed when we recognize the familiar pattern beginning to emerge. For example imagine a person who may have been emotionally abused. The abuser would establish some sort of specific behavior each time they would subject that person to the abuse. Maybe the abuser would listen to a type of music before the ill treatment began. Maybe the abuse would be linked to certain situations like the lack of money. The abused person learns to recognize these behaviors and associate them with the abuse. When one of these behaviors is discerned it may trigger feelings of anxiety in the abused person.

Fear or anxiety may also be triggered by specific sights, smells, sounds, places, or people. It just depends on the factors which you associate with a negative incident.

The good news is that you can overcome anxiety. Overcoming anxiety is a learned behavior but it is entirely possible. The first thing that you need to do is to recognize the feelings of anxiety when they come over you. The next thing that you need to do is to consciously choose to not allow these feelings to control your actions. You cant prevent them from coming but you can control them when they do.

Do not allow the fear to consume your mind. This is easier said than done but once again it is possible. The first thing that I do is to find a task to concentrate on. When my energy is focused on a specific task my fear is alleviated. It is not possible to be consumed with emotion and concentrate at the same time so learn to focus. Do not deny the symptoms of fear but do not allow them to control your actions.

Find something positive to focus on. Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Doing so will help you to alleviate your feelings of fear. The thoughts that you give your attention to will eventually begin to consume you. If you give your attention to the positive the positive will begin to dictate your reactions.

Another good tactic which I have found to work is to concentrate on slowing things down. In other words think one thought at the time while making an effort to control the next thought that enters your mind. Also rationalize your situation. Is it really as bad as it seems? There is always a way out of all trouble but you need to be able to find it. Riceland Enterprises
