When you get on the plane, simply ask if there is a slight chance of getting an upgraded. You could explain that you're a regular customer, and that you'd love to try first class just this once. Cabin crew have it in their power to have your upgraded if you're very lucky.

When taking flights from Spokane to Los Angeles you may have been told by your airline to be there at least one hour in advance. By being the first person there, you stand a good chance of being on top of the list for upgrades. Many airlines also overbook flights.
