How Do You Cut A Brass Sheet?

For the benefit of those who do not know what brass is

, you might want to know that it is a metal that is made by man from alloy of copper and zinc. It is highly malleable but durable in its own special way. The property of malleability makes it very convenient and easy to cut and shape it with ease. This and the property its acoustic characteristics make it a very popular material used in the creation of musical instruments.

A lot of architects in practice utilize brass sheets for walls, cladding and flooring. There are brass sheets that are 1/8 inch and there are those that are thinner than 1/8 both can be easily cut utilizing tin snips. However, there are also brass sheets that are thicker around 1/2 inches, which will need specialized tools such as rotary tool and advanced tools for attachments.

So, before you begin cutting your brass sheet, there are some things that you need and it includes wheel cover, fine toothed metal file, measuring stick, and rotary tool, long or angled tin snips, mineral oil and permanent marker. The procedure follows the same steps for the first and second and it involves holding a measuring stick on the line that you wish to cut and marking this line with a permanent marker.

The third step for cutting thin sheets is to hold the tin snips in the hand that you are comfortable with. Always keep the brass sheet in place with your other free hand and make sure that it will not move otherwise you would have uneven cut edge. Most sheet brass suppliers will provide a technique in pinning down the sheet but this should suffice for thin sheets.

Once you ensured that the brass sheet is in place, cut the marked line carefully. You can gently lift the brass sheet if you are not using angled snips. Make a continuous cut until you reach the other end of the sheet that you have marked. If you are not sure whether you can achieve smoothly cut edges, you can ask your sheet brass suppliers to make the desired cut for you.

Now, for thick sheets continue with the third step by applying mineral oil to the line that you have marked. Utilize a rotary tool and move the cut off wheel you have fitted on the marked line and slowly cut until you reach the other side of the sheet. But, if the situation becomes complicated for you, you can always ask sheet brass suppliers whether they can cut the sheet for you.
