How Do You Do Animation?

How Do You Do Animation?

How Do You Do Animation?

There are those who have experience in this field of animation but in this case it is how do you do animation? which means you have very little experience or knowledge.

It can be very mind boggling and the truth of the matter it could take you years to understand the art behind animation, but truth be told, with software animation application, limited knowledge is required as one could get lost on the subject.

To simplify this it is basically bringing an image or object to life by causing an illusion of motion by running a sequence of images to create motion where in fact it Is not true, the images or models are fixed and do not move its the running of the sequence of images that creates the animation.

There are basically 3 steps

1)Modeling

2)Layout and background

3)Rendering

Simple so off you go and become an animator, not so simple Lets try and take a simple example to explain. I am sure you are familiar with the old trick of putting an image of a stick figure of a person on the first page, referred to as modeling and by using tracing paper you would almost duplicate the stick figure with a slight variation, for example you move the leg slightly forward.

If you did enough of these you could then flick through the pages and create an illusion of motion as if the stick figure is walking, that is animation.

Obviously this is done by professional artists with precision and perfection to create a smooth animation sequence too much of a variance will cause a jerky animation when flicking through the pages.

Try it, its quite good fun see if you can make your stick figure walk and the move his arms you will need to do a lot of stick figures to create an animation, but as I mentioned tracing paper would make life a lot easier as you can flick back and forward to see what the movements are like and ensure that the variance is not to great to ensure a smooth animation.

Now you could simply set up a camera and start recording as you flick through the pages of your stick animation, and experiment with different camera angles, its quite an achievement. When doing this it will be very plain such as a stick image walking and moving his arms with a white background, that is where the next step would come into it the layout and background or referred to as backdrop, you could simply use a fixed background image for example beach scene with your stick figure walking along it, its not difficult to do this the challenge would be to make the waves move or trees blowing in the wind and it is the same as before and you conjoin the two.

To really become a pro you could add light and shadows and experiment with different angles or referred to as rendering, basically really fine tuning. If you have managed to do this manually and have never been involved in animation, then give yourself a huge pat on the back as it takes massive amount of commitment, patience, timing and perfection. As mentioned before a 3d animation software would be a far easier option with built in 3d modeling meshing, background templates and time-lines it is a lot easier even with no experience as most have really good guidelines and support.

The idea is to have a basic understanding of the basics which you do now, and understand that it is a sequence of still images or 3D objects that create an illusion of motion. If this is clear and you understand the principle behind animation and you are looking to peruse it further you will have a better understanding, this is assuming that you have no experience or understanding.

The artwork or sketching is done mostly by professionals who basically blend their art work within an animation program or application to save time, now days you can get software with the artwork done already as it is used to build the basis of the animation software. You could of course take another option and do courses or attend animation studios and train that way, what ever way you decide to learn how to do animation is up to you, there is no right or wrong way, but there is an easy way, use 3d animation software you will soon learn this way, as you will have to learn to understand the software application and study the instruction guides.
