Unless you are a hermit, you have heard about the toll that global warming is taking on our environment, ecology, polar bears and many living species and the health of the human species itself. Explosion in human population growth itself is the main reason for this degradation of our environment. An inherent trait of human species is to improve living conditions and that of the next generation. While doing so we inadvertently do the opposite and damage our environment. So how do we reverse that trend? Gandhi said, "be the change you want the world to be". So here are a few tips to develop a habit to be ecologically friendly. Let your friends, you family and specially your children notice the habits you have adopted. It is sure to rub on them down over time.1. Avoid buying any products with unnecessary and excessive packaging. A lot of grocery stores sell produce in bulk bags. This gives you flexibility of not only saving on packaging, but also picking up quantity that you think you can actually use.2. Turn off all unnecessary lights. Unplug or switch off battery chargers for you cell phones, blue tooth, cameras or laptops after the charge has been completed. When live, these chargers still consume and produce power which is wasted.3. Besides driving energy efficient cars, plan your routes ahead of time to make sure that you do not backtrack too much while running errands. Also, plan to avoid left side turns. On most right turns, you do not have to wait for lights to turn green. Easy way to save time and gas.4. Don't buy disposable cleaning cloths. Instead, buy soft clothes with can be re-used over and over. Scrub you tubs/shower with soap/water with these clothes and they are put to dry for re-use.5. Try to buy products, soaps and insecticides which are plant based, not chemical based. This will minimize environmental impact.6. Install programmable thermostats and program them to control your temperatures according to your needs and availability at home. You can also check out thermostats which can be controlled through Wifi/internet. Think of all the energy and money you save.7. Install timers and infrared light switches to automatically turn lights on and off when you are not in a room or home. Infrared switches turn on a light when you approach you home/door.8. Replace you old energy inefficient refrigerators, dishwashers and cloth washing machines. Speaking of dishwasher, try washing your dishes with hand and see how therapeutic it can be. Avoid using cloth dryer. It is probably the biggest energy hog at home.9. Buy cleaning products in bulk and refill them in plastic spray pump bottles. Better still refill them with organic cleaning liquids to reduce the impact on the environment.10. If you do not live in a condo, consider installing solar energy system on your roof or backyard. Many states and provinces have fabulous incentives, which bring down cost of installations to next to nothing. These are just a few of the ways that you can do to take part in reducing your carbon foot print on this planet and in the process make your wallet green.Do you have an idea that you want to discuss?
