How Does A Breathalyzer Work
A breathalyzer is used to estimate the level of alcohol in a person's body by means of a breath sample. Breath alcohol testing devices were initially developed to assist the police. It is impractical for police officers to do blood or urine tests while out on the road, and this is the reason why these devices were introduced.Alcohol is not digested in one's body. It will normally be taken in via the membranes that are situated in one's intestines, stomach, throat and mouth. Once the alcohol is absorbed by one's body, it immediately goes into one's bloodstream and stays there until it is metabolized by the liver or forced out by evaporation, which occurs in the lungs. This evaporation occurs as the molecules in alcohol do not combine with liquids which it comes into contact with. When the blood goes through the lungs, the alcohol will go across the membranes of the air sacs of the lungs and enter the air. The amount of the alcohol in the air from the lungs is common with the concentration of alcohol within the blood. The expelling of the now vaporized alcohol through the breath allows accurate measurement of the blood alcohol concentration. The percentage of alcohol that is expelled will contain the same level of alcohol that is in the blood. The amount of alcohol that is present in 2100 ml of exhaled breath is equivalent to the alcohol amount in 1 milliliter of blood. When a calculation is done using this measure, it is possible to obtain an exact measure of the level of intoxication. This device's operation is similar to strips used during urine testing or the strips used to test pool water. The device basically consists of a mouthpiece, a tube through which a person will blow, and a sample chamber into which the air goes. It also contains two glass vials which contain the chemical mixture. And there is a system of photocells which are connected to a meter which will measure the color change and this is linked to the chemical reaction. To determine the level of intoxication, the reacted portion of the mixture is compared to the static portion in the photocell system. This causes an electric current which allows the needle in the meter to move from its starting point.A knob has to be rotated to bring the needle back to its starting point and the alcohol level reading can then be taken. The more the knob has to be turned on the breathalyzer, the higher the alcohol content level.
