How Does The Indexing Function Affect A Computer's Speed

?

It seems that some computer users or technicians are stopping the indexing function as a way of helping a computer that is working too slowly. But will this actually improve a computer's performance? I agree that indexing does use a small amount of capacity but I don't know if you will ever see any improvement when it's stopped.

What is indexing? It is comparable to an index in a book that helps you find what you are looking for when you search. But this function has nothing to do with locating information about operation of the PC or searching the internet. It's strictly to help you find things on the pc itself such as documents, pictures, etc.

The indexing will occur without your knowledge and will take up some of the capability of the processor while it is running. But it happens very fast compared to a lot of other functions. In a healthy computer you would never know it is going on.

Stopping the indexing function is easy and you can do it yourself. The way it may be reached from all operating systems is to right-click on your C drive that is found under Computer in the Start menu. Then go to the General tab and find an option of indexing or not and mark it to not index.

You can find out very easily if stopping the indexing will help your computer. Just turn it off, as above, and see if your PC is faster or not. If not turn it back on.

RAM and Virtual Memory will both affect your computer working speed. These are much more important in how fast a computer operates. Virtual memory may be set up higher but most of our operating systems today will do this automatically. I know that after Vista the virtual memory will reset itself if more storage area is needed.

But random access memory is a fixed storage unit outside of the pc's hard drive. It's whatever size that was installed, and can't be adjusted. However, additional RAM can be added easily. Check other articles or posts for information on this method of increasing your pc's speed.
