How Does The Internet Work?

The internet is simply a collection of computers joined together to form a network, the basic principle is not that much different to the network you may run at your home or office.

Typically the computers that make up the internet are called servers, and its on these servers that the web sites you visit everyday are kept. Each server has a special address in the form of a number, and its this number that allows all the other computers connected to each other to find a specific computer or server.

When you type a web address into your web browser, your request is sent first to your ISPs computers, then onto what is called a DNS server, this DNS server holds a huge list of every domain name, and the associated number for each domain name to be able to find the server.

Once the DNS server has found the number for the server when the web page you want is held, it sends your request onto that server, then when the server receives your request it searches its hard drives for the web page you requested and that information is then sent back to your computer in HTML format that your web browser can recognise and display as a web page.

The DNS servers are the heart of the World Wide Web, they are what holds everything together and allow you to get web pages from the specific server where the web page is held among the millions of servers around the world.

Without DNS we would all have to know the exact number of the server we wanted to get the web page from, so instead of typing a nice memorable domain name into our web browsers, we would need to type in a 12 digit sequence of numbers, as you can imagine that would make using the internet much more difficult.
