How Freezers Are Used In The Laboratory

Within any Blood Bank laboratory, you will find a blood freezer of some description

. Most products stored in these freezers will be blood-derived products needing immediate freezing, usually at temperatures of -30C or lower. Having the space to store and freeze such products is necessary for preservation of such products, as they are needed from any blood bank.

A good lab freezer unit will have the space needed for the laboratory's needs. Sizes from 90 liters, or 3.2 cubic feet bench top models, up to larger uprights are available. The temperature ranges can be from -20C to -80C, depending on the products being stored.

Any laboratory freezer being integrated into the laboratory should be functional beyond just freezing blood products. Proper storage of reagents and controls, especially freeze-dried products, need a constant temperature control. Blood plasma and related blood products are best stored at temperatures that remain constant, without a very large flux.

The freezing unit should have a system that is CFC-free, and be self-contained for its compressor unit. The walls of the laboratory freezer should have a polyurethane foam insulation to reduce power costs. Cascade cooling is the preferred freezing method, as this also reduces the workload of the compressor unit.

Quick-freezing is important for the preservation of vital blood products and other materials used in blood banking and research. Many Biotech products need immediate freezing, and a high-tech cascade freezing method provides this. Ultra-cooling can be achieved with a laboratory freezer that has these attributes.

Simple freezer designs have only the circular chart temperature tracking design. High-tech freezing units now have microchip control as well as the circular paper chart. Having computer control on board means that the freezing unit can result in precision temperature control, thus assuring constant, non-wavering temperature.

A digital temperature display is very useful for daily temperature record keeping. Alarm systems are available with the higher-tech laboratory freezers, which are tripped when the system reads out of range temperatures. Constant monitoring of the temperature ranges give peace of mind for the laboratory personnel.

Computer interfaces have been developed for laboratory information management systems to aid in monitoring all refrigeration and freezing units in the laboratory. This is excellent for the monitoring of daily temperatures without going from one unit to the next, writing down every shift the temperatures of each.

Some laboratory freezing units can come with a master calibration unit to keep the temperatures in a completely precise range. The alarm system can be set in some freezing unit to give a mobile alarm or message in case of a failure in the system, for the laboratory management personnel on the go. Monitoring of laboratory freezers has come into the computer age, making that monitoring much easier for the laboratory information management much easier.

There are bench-style plasma freezers, or upright moveable units with casters built in. Whatever your volume of blood products needing immediate freezing, there is a laboratory freezer built for your needs. Temperature ranges, inside volume, and monitoring options have all gone high-tech. Finding the freezer for your laboratory blood bank or research department is no longer a daunting task.
