I can speak with some authority about game servers, having run a GSP for 8 years. I've seen all forms of GSP's - the good, the bad and the ugly. There are better practises for running a game server host, and very bad ones. Let's take a look at how game servers work. Most gameservers will normally support multiple server operating systems. It's very unlikely you'll find a gameserver that doesn't run on Windows. CSS servers for example run great on both Windows and Linux. A few games however, do only run on Windows. The majority of game server hosts run Windows 2003 Server. There is always much argument as to which operating system is best. The hardcore server admin generally favours a Linux operating system. Linux is indeed thought to be more stable. Linux servers are generally smoother and thought to be more secure. You can always choose to run Wine on Linux in order to emulate Windows. Although do bear in mind that Wine isn't the real deal, i.e. Windows itself. So why do people rent game servers from GSP's? Surely it would make sense to run it yourself on dedicated servers? Well if you are a seasoned game server admin, perhaps. Let's assume you are going to run your game servers on a Linux dedicated server. The security including patching of the server will be down to you. If the dedicated server breaks, you are going to need to know how to mend it. If not, you are going to end up paying your dedicated server provider to sort the issue for you. Of course knowing what you are doing, and not chowning the Linux operating system to another user generally helps! A game server provider will spend all day fixing mods for you. Mods and addons are developed by members of the gaming community. Consider, they aren't being developed in software houses, and with that they come with bugs.
