How Google thinks like a librarian
No search engine marketing expert can tell you exactly how Google thinks - no one knows all the algorithms that help it decide, in a couple of seconds, which page out of many millions to promote above all others. It is possible, however, to understand the key things you can do to help Google choose you above your competition.
If you are a small business owner wanting to understand how Google works, you may find it confusing to hear SEO experts talking about keyword density, domain authority and link juice. Even if you understand the concept, it can be hard to get a handle on why you may appear high up on some occasions and not on others.
There's a simple analogy that will help you understand how Google works. Think of Google as a librarian.
Say you go into your local library and ask the librarian to recommend a book on architecture, the librarian will first think of all the books on the subject, then use several criteria to decide on the best book for you. The book he or she most likely recommends will be a book that is popular (lots of people borrow it), a book that contains a lot of information on a broad range of architectural issues, a book from a respected publisher that's renowned for its knowledge in the subject, a book that has had good reviews and perhaps one that contains a good bibliography.
When it comes to ranking websites, Google is, quite simply, doing the same thing. First you tell it what you are looking for. Using that keyword or phrase, Google then looks at all the pages in its index containing that search term. Any pages where the search term seems to be matched well with the content of the page will be preferred choices, but of those the pages that are recommended first will be those from respected publishers (ie, websites with a high domain authority).
If your website, or your relevant page, has lots of people recommending (linking to) it; if your content matches well; if your article also links off to other places for more, equally relevant, information there is a very good chance the Google librarian will give you a big thumbs up.
