How Hard Is Hardwood?
Acacia Falcata is the fastest growing tree we know
. Now, there might be some arborists out there who are wagging their fingers at the screen saying, oh no you didnt! Well, we welcome discussion and lively debate, so if you have uncovered a new fast growing tree that will turn the record books upside down, we would love to hear about it. But, as far as our research has lead us, we currently know the Acacia Falcata to be the fastest growing tree around. So what does this have to do with hardwood mats? Well, if were talking about the Acacia Falcata specifically, then nothing really. But, if we are talking in general terms about the value of a fast growing tree, then it has everything to do with hardwood mats. Although some slow growing trees (like cherry for example) are know for the fine wood that they produce, in the industry of hardwood mat manufacturing, there is very little interest in slow growing trees. Not that they arent beautiful or incredibly durable, it is just that in an industry where hardwood mats are being thrown underneath massive machinery, the fine quality of grain found in some beautiful specimens of hardwood trees would simply be a waste of a good thing. Hardwood mats are primarily about one thing and one thing only: strength.
Durability and strength are of the utmost importance in the window manufacturing industry. Without fast growing, durable hardwood growing in abundance throughout our country, the hardwood mat industry would look very different. The structural makeup of dense hardwoods make the perfect material from which to make matting and cribbage that can withstand basically anything that you can throw at it. From decking on ships, to cribbage on trains, to earth stabilizing mats in marshlands and deserts alike, the hardwood mat is one of the most durable items on a construction site. If you are feeling bored, check out some of the footage out there of hardwood mats in action doing what hardwood ground cover does best, being a stabilizing force on the jobsite. So next time you see a crane mat, bridge mat, or any other form of hardwood mat on the jobsite, ponder where we might be without fast growing hardwood trees to keep things running smoothly for all of us! Ponder, reflect, and keep on keeping on until next time! Farewell fellow students of the magnificent hardwood mat! (That was a bit overboard, sorry!)
