How Hauliers Can Improve on Their Safety

That is a huge amount of rigs and it is important to remember that many of them will have a great deal of goods in their trailers as well

. It doesn't take a genius then, to realise that a haulier whose truck is stolen stands to lose an awful lot of money.

Obviouslycomprehensive haulage insurance is only there as a very last resort and transport firms do not want to make a claim on it unless it is absolutely necessary. So, what exactly can be done by hauliers to tackle truck theft? Well, most security measures are just basic common sense, but it can be very easy to become complacent. Many truckers tend to adopt an it'll never happen to me' attitude and become far too laid back as a result. But the truth is that thieves can strike at anytime and we should always keep this in mind.

Here are a few things which truck drivers can do to reduce the risk of crime

General Security

Never leave your truck unlocked and always remove your keys. You may only plan to be away from it for a few minutes, but this is more than enough time for it to be stolen.

If you do have to leave your vehicle, then make sure that all doors are locked and remove any of your personal belongings from sight. When you return it is always a good idea to check each door to be sure that no-one has been tampering with the lock.

When parking your truck it is wise to avoid using lay-bys whenever possible and to opt for well-lit secure parking areas instead. If you can, then leave your vehicle with the loading doors close to a building; this will make it far more difficult for thieves to gain access to your trailer.

Never discuss what items you are carrying with anyone unless it is absolutely necessary. You'd be surprised how word gets around!

Security on the Road

If you are ever told to change your delivery address, then never do so without first double checking it with your transport manager. It will only take you a few minutes to make sure this amendment is all above board and it may prevent your vehicle from being stolen.

Do not pick-up any hitch hikers! Letting a stranger into your vehicle is one of the most dangerous things you can do.

If you need to refuel your truck, do it on site whenever you can. This will immediately remove the risk of you stopping anywhere that may not be one-hundred percent safe.

Should anything ever happen on your journey which is downright suspicious, then you should always phone the police.
