How Humidity Data Loggers Work
Temperature data loggers measure and record temperatures for defined periods of time
. They periodically take samples and then store them digitally for further reference. In addition to measuring temperature, some temperature data loggers include other sensors as well, which enable them to measure relative humidity, light, etc. Then they also function as humidity data loggers.
Most temperature and humidity data loggers have an internal thermistor or a thermocouple, or they may need to be connected to external sources. Modern temperature and humidity logging devices have a built in display to indicate data or warnings of out of tolerance values. Most temperature and humidity data loggers have internal memory for the storage of the data they record. Other humidity data loggers can interface with personal computers or smartphones. In this manner, the setup, subsequent control and analysis of humidity data are implemented.
Humidity data loggers which are equipped with displays and front panel buttons enable users to view current relative humidity values, as well as the maximum and the minimum values observed during recording sessions. There is a special MAX/MIN button enabling the displaying of the maximum and minimum values recorded.
Display equipped humidity data loggers have a LED indicator which flashes at programmed rates while the device is doing the data logging. When the values measured exceed programmed value ranges, and when the LED function has been selected by means of the software, the ALARM LED starts flashing at a specified rate, e.g. once a minute. There is also an alarm display signal showing when the sensors measuring humidity need to be attended for.
When
temperature data loggers and humidity data loggers are used in environments with low temperature and high humidity, they should be upright and placed in a dry spot, in order to avoid condensation before the data downloading is performed.
The battery life is an important factor for the efficient functioning of temperature and humidity data logging devices. Extending the battery life of temperature and humidity data loggers can be achieved by means of leaving the data logging device connected to a personal computer. It should also be noted that disabling the REC and the ALARM LED contributes to extending the battery life of a humidity data logger.
Autonomous temperature data loggers and humidity data logging devices can be easily taken to locations with no easy support for fixed temperature and humidity monitoring. Portable temperature and data logging devices are also indispensable for industrial and laboratory situations where it is mandatory to have stand alone means of recording. They are compact and small enough to be placed inside insulated containers, or they can be attached to products inside refrigerator trucks or refrigerated containers.
