How I Ran The Muddy Buddy Faster At Age 37 Than I Did At Age 27

I ran the annual Muddy Buddy this past weekend in Chicago (its actually in Gilberts IL

. but who the hell knows where that is). The Muddy Buddy is traditionally a duathlon with obstacles wherein one partner starts the race riding a bike while their partner starts off on foot. When either of them reaches an obstacle (monkey bars, rope ladder, etc) they switch and the biker sets off for the next obstacle on foot and the runner jumps on the bike and this leapfrogging continues until the race ends. I have run this race before, my first time being a decade ago when I was 27. Since then I have run it a few times but have never felt better or run faster than I did this past weekend at the age of 37. At first I was like how did that happen? But then I quickly realized the difference between this past weekend and the times I had run this race before. I ran this Muddy Buddy smarter. I trained smarter and I did the right things leading up to race day. I didnt necessarily train harder, I trained smarter.

When I was 27 I would definitely have considered myself a runner. I enjoyed running and so much so that I devoted a great deal of my free time to becoming a better runner. I didnt really practice any technique though. I just figured the more I ran the faster I was going to get, the longer I was going to be capable of running, and the better I was going to get. I never had my form looked at, never tried different training methods and didnt really watch what I was eating (or drinking for that matter). I just ran with what I thought was proper form, ate pretty much what I wanted to, drank beer at least one night a week (usually more) and assumed my running would improve and it did to a degree.

10 years later and to say the least things have changed. Im married now, with 3 beautiful children and a completely different outlook on life. Id also say I am a bigger fitness enthusiast than I was 10 years ago. For one, I adhere to a much more balanced and nutritious diet and that can make a huge difference in how you feel and how you perform, especially as you get older. I supplement these days with what I believe are safe yet effective supplements like creatine, multi vitamins, fish oil and protein shakes. My training methods have vastly improved and now I do weight training, plyometrics, some CrossFit inspired training, and also some interval/speed training interspersed with my normal running routine. All of these changes greatly impacted my ability to run my best Muddy Buddy ever this year. I also make it a habit to try my hardest to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night (not always easy with 3 kids) whereas in my 20s I was getting no more than 6 hours per night and often much less than that. Sleep is a huge factor in overall health and should not be ignored.

So if you are in your 30s (or 40s, 50s, 60. 70s 80s) and looking for a PR of your own or are just looking to improve upon your current times please pay attention to training, rest, supplementation and diet as they will play a major role in doing so.

Train Smarter,
