How I lost 70 pounds in 6 months!
Last year I finally realized I was overweight. It should have never really been a surprise. I've been heavy from one degree to another since I was a teenager and I am 38 year old as I write this article. I ignored it. I avoided full length mirrors and having my pictures taken. In my mind, if I didn't see it, it wasn't an issue. I joked eating was an activity I excelled at and was too good to give it up. When I finally became pregnant almost three years ago, I developed gestational diabetes and was told that if I didn't attempt to do something about my weight, within the next ten years I would develop type 2 diabetes. I also have a strong family history of the disease which increases my odds even more. Still I didn't rush to lose the weight. Not until my Mother's Day gift from my husband and then two year old son was a day to go clothes shopping at the mall. "Buy what you need." my husband said. What woman doesn't want to hear that? However, as I tried on clothes and nothing was fitting I could feel my stomach turning. I was ready to go into a size 24w and I just couldn't do it. I left the mall with a purse, a set of earrings, a t-shirt, and a large cherry coke to make myself feel better. Needless to say when I finished the drink, I didn't feel better. When I complained to my husband, I didn't feel better. When I looked in the mirror, I didn't feel better. I'd had enough.
It took about a month for me to actually take action. The treadmill that sat in our bedroom for four years as a clothes hanger got moved into the garage in order for me to work out early in the mornings. I am a morning person and knew if this was going to happen it had to be in the a.m. On July 5, I woke up and did my first walk at 5:45 a.m. It lasted about 30 minutes and I loved it. Time for me, to think, to not think. So I continued walking for a week. No pressure, no dieting, just walking. One week later I decided I would weigh myself and keep a chart of my progress on a chart posted on the refrigerator. The scale read 254 lbs. and I wasn't surprised. I wasn't going to be embarrassed or afraid of that number anymore. I decided to weigh myself only once a month as the scale seems to hinder my weight loss progress, at least it did in years past. The next time I weighed it was seven pounds less and just from walking.
I then started watching what I ate. I made small changes to my eating habits one at a time. I cut back on sodas and then completely got rid of them over time. Less processed foods and fast foods. I eat healthy snacks in between meals and one sometimes in the evening. I try to just make better choices. I never deprived myself. If I really want something, I have it and try to cut back somewhere else or accept that I may not lose as much weight that month.
I'm sitting here at content 170 lbs. nine months later. I'm sixteen pounds away from losing 100 lbs. How amazing is that? I now walk/run 4.4 miles every day, do 45 sit-ups, 45 crunches, and I just added 30 crunches to the mix. I'm a lean mean mommy machine and I'm proud of myself. I did it. Me. Not a weight loss program, diet, or trainer. Me. Not that there is anything wrong with having help, but for me, if I was going to succeed I knew that I had to do it. I had to be responsible for my body. The one piece of advice I would give anyone embarking on this journey is that you have to be responsible for what you put in your body and how it is treated. No one else. It doesn't matter what everyone else is doing. It is up to you.
