How Important Is It To Learn Photography - Can You Still Be A Photogapher
Photography is awesome! There are so many kinds of images that it can satisfy nearly everyone in some way
. That's why I have been spending so much time and effort trying to
learn photography, every facet of it. But I get too focused on the technological aspects rather than on the creativeness involved in photography.
That's why I came to these couple of questions. Is photography art? And does owning a nice camera, like a digital SLR, make a person a photographer?
I have been pondering these two questions lately with regard to my own photography. I definitely fit one of the parameters. I own a digital SRL. There is rarely a day that passes without my camera being used. Still, I occasionally have difficulty classifying myself a photographer.
The reason I have such a problem is because of the work of others. I spend so much time viewing the pictures of photographers who I regard as very gifted in the area of photography, and, truthfully, I regard my photos fairly lousy after viewing theirs. However, someone else looks at my photos and declares their excellence. My problem, I imagine, is personal expectation.
I want to take pictures that compare to photographers like Jeff Wignall or Scott Kelby, a couple of my favorite photographers and teachers. Those guys make my pictures look second rate.
I'm pretty critical about my own work in photography. Yet at times, I tend to be even more critical of those who think of themselves photographers yet they know naught about the technical part of picture taking. Is it really possible that a person call himself a photographer when he doesn't know an f-stop from an exposure setting?
Recently, however, I suppose I have come to my senses. I have been very shallow in my judgement. It is true that we are entitled to our own view about what is art and what is not. I have come to realize, I invest too much time on the technical data and sharpness of the image than on the artistic or emotional value.
Photography as art is when a picture can cause some emotion in the viewer.
A person's ability to manipulate the camera settings, while important, is not art. Equally, if the camera menu is never touched, what is wrong with that? The key is that they are taking pictures that bring joy, or sadness, or wonder to others.
Another thought is that all photographers are not attempting to get their images accepted by National Geographic . They only want to have a record or journal of family memories, and that really does make them artists and photographers.
My desire for this article is simply to encourage "photographers" to keep on shooting. Use every creative idea that comes into your imagination. It costs nothing to record a digital image. Who knows? Perhaps you will change someone's mood from sad to glad, or even have a picture show up on the cover of Shutterbug Magazine in spite of us Pixel Peepers.
