How Important Is Security Awareness Training In A Company?

Security awareness basically means to be aware of and possess knowledge regarding

the protection of the physical and also the intangible assets of an organization. It is for this reason that many organizations nowadays keep up-to-date formal training of security awareness for all their workers. It is imparted not only when they join the organization, but also during the routine course of their term in the organization, as part of their work schedule. Also its practiced, periodically, mostly annually.

Security awareness means that you understand about the potential danger when some people deliberately or accidentally steal, hurt, damage, or misuse the data that is vital to a company or is stored within a company's database. It could be in the companys computer systems and used throughout the company; used by some or all the employees from time to time. Therefore, it is of vital importance to the smooth functioning and security of the company, that everyone within the company is at least aware and trained on the security issues. Its in the best interests of any company to save its assets from being stolen or misused. Assets can be in the form of important information, physical assets or even personal assets.

Security Awareness Training should help in achieving a long term change in the basic attitudes of the employees. It is to make them more aware of the security issues, at the same time promoting a culture that is endearing to a positive growth for the company. Security policies should be user friendly, easy to understand and relatable to everyone involved. It should not be a series of rules that simply restrict the efficient working of the company and hamper its work environment.

Most often, someone related or in charge of the company is likely to be held accountable for ensuring that all the major points in the security training program are well executed. Sometimes it involves assigning specific security responsibilities to the stewards of the company.

The goal of a Security Awareness Training program should be to protect and maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility of the companys informative assets and data. These security training schedules and policies can be custom made as per each companys needs. But one major point to be taken care of when designing a security awareness and training program is that they need to communicate effectively to the employees how they are expected to perform and behave when it comes to dealing with security related matters.

The ultimate motive of these training programs for inducing security awareness among employees and others is not only to get them aware and alert, but also to get them to understand their specific security roles and responsibilities in a company scenario. In order to achieve this motive, one must plan the program by focusing on the areas that could effectively tone down the highest impact of threats and the most likely risks. The time constraints, as to how much time the employees are going to take to get educated about all the security processes, their aptitude at grasping the root cause behind the teachings, etc. are also vital factors worth considering.
