How Is Blister Packaging Used?
Blister packaging is used to package many different consumer goods
. It's unique packaging properties make blister packs ideal for many different uses. With varying production methods and materials, blister packaging can be adjusted and optimized for packaging many different products.
What is blister packaging?
Small consumer products are often distributed in blister packaging. A blister pack is a backed plastic material with a well used to store the product. It may be a card with a single product packaged in molded plastic, or it may be packs of blister cards, each with many products sealed in individual blisters.
How is blister packaging used?
Blister packaging is often used for unit dose packaging of pharmaceuticals. Medicinal pills or lozenges are packaged this way to prolong their shelf life, create a calendar pack for tracking dosages, and to prevent tampering. An example of unit dose packaging for a pharmaceutical is the sore throat lozenge Sucret. Each red lozenge is individually sealed in a blister, or cavity, on a card of many sealed blisters. The lozenge is removed by pushing it through the foil on the card.
Another medical use of blister packaging beyond pharmaceutical blister packs is the medical blister tray. Thicker plastic is used to produce a firm tray with an easy-to-peel film for opening. A medical blister tray may be used in device sterilization processes in hospitals.
Blister packaging is also used to package small consumer products. There is usually a printed paperboard card with product information on it. The product is placed on this card and then packaged by a clear pre-formed plastic blister so that the consumer can actually see the product through the package.
The clamshell is a specific type of blister packaging used for small, high-value items. Often used to package consumer electronics, they are intended to deter tampering by making it very difficult to open the package. These are the frustrating packages at Christmastime that require the ever-absent scissors or knife to open. This type of blister packaging has become the source of much rage and injury because of its effectiveness at preventing tampering. It is very difficult to open by hand, and once cut open with scissors or knife to obtain the product, the plastic packaging remains very sharp and dangerous.
How is blister packaging produced?
The fundamental material used in blister packaging production is polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC. There are two main ways to produce blister packaging: thermoforming and cold forming. In thermoforming, the plastic is preheated to become pliable and then molded into whatever shape is needed for the blister. Coldforming produces what are known in the blister packaging industry as cold form foil blisters. This process uses an aluminum-based film pressed into shape using a stamp.
Blister packaging production differs from the type of automated packaging system used for vertical form fill sealing. A form fill seal is used when a plastic bag is created from a flat sheet of plastic, then filled and sealed with the product inside.
Blister packaging is a plastic product well covered with some sort of backing. Blister packaging may house a single product or many products. Some blister packages can be opened with a simple peel, whereas other blister packaging like the clamshell requires perseverance and sharp tools. Blister packaging can be used for medicines, small products, and electronics. It is produced through either heat molding the plastic or by stamping a laminate.
