How It Feels To Suffer From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Trying to describe post traumatic stress disorder to someone who has never suffered
from it can be difficult, which makes the process of understanding the condition even harder. This is also true for people who do actually suffer from the disorder but are perhaps unaware of the condition. This makes it very difficult for sufferers to seek help or even be aware that they should be seeking help for the condition, which can start to exacerbate the problems. It is helpful for people to be aware of what a post traumatic stress sufferer goes through in order to have a better chance of recognising the condition in themselves or in someone around them.
One of the most common problems that someone suffering from post traumatic stress disorder will have is flashbacks to the event. It is bad enough that the sufferer has lived through a traumatic experience once in their life, but to have the memories come back to them at unexpected times can make life a nightmare. These flashbacks can occur during the daytime or they may manifest themselves as nightmares, which will interrupt the sufferer's sleep. Either way, suffering these situations at any time of day or night is upsetting and can trigger off emotions and physical sensations from the time.
Other problems that many people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder can suffer from relate to them feeling numb or avoiding certain issues. This can have a hugely negative impact on their quality of life and there is no doubt that people will withdraw from their friends, family and the world. This starts off as a coping mechanism but can very quickly become a bigger issue, as by shutting out friends and loved ones, the sufferer is effectively cutting off contact from people who are likely to be most affected, as well as being the keenest to help.
Another thing that sufferers from post traumatic stress disorder will feel is that they are constantly on guard and tensed up. This can cause a lot of health-related problems, and difficulties in interactions with other people. Being in a hyper-vigilant state can cause people to be overanxious, leading to them being unnecessarily curt or short-tempered with other people. Again, this can negatively impact on their interactions with others, causing them to feel even more removed from the world around them. These are feelings and emotions you should look out for in yourself or those around you when there is a chance that people may be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
