Through the reshaping of the cornea, light travels better into the eye and to the retina. The flap then comes back covering the surface of the eye from which the corneal tissues have been removed.

During the entire surgery the patient is completely awake, and the procedure lasts hardly five minutes. For some patients, the surgeon may prescribe a mild oral sedative to be taken before the procedure, but in any case, the patient does not need to be hospitalized, he just walks in to the surgery and walks out after the procedure. Of course he needs some help to go home; it is not advisable to drive just after the surgery.

Though the complete surgery lasts just a few minutes, it is indeed a difficult and delicate surgery, and should be done only by experienced and qualified doctors. The equipment should also be of the best quality. At first the surgeon puts some drops in the eyes, which anesthetize them, so that the procedure is painless for the patient. The laser is then positioned directly above the eye and the eyelids are kept open by a retainer.

With the help of laser the flap is created by the surgeon. In order to ensure perfect safety, the device is attached to the cornea to prevent any kind of movement, or any loss of contact. As the surgeon resurfaces the cornea using the laser light, the patient cannot feel anything at all. He perhaps hears some clicking sound from the laser, but feels no pain or discomfort.

Your eye needs to be rested immediately after the procedure. If the procedure is being done in both eyes, the second eye is immediately taken for treatment. Sometimes you might feel a mild discomfort after the laser surgery, but some medication prescribed by your surgeon for postoperative pain will be able to combat the pain in a short period of time.
