How Laundry Room Storage Can Make Doing Laundry Easier
Doing the laundry can be drudgery
Doing the laundry can be drudgery. But with some organization, you can cut the length of time you're at work in the laundry room. And with some added touches, you can make your laundry room one of your favorite rooms in the house.
Close at hand
One of the best ways to cut down on the length of time you spend doing laundry is to make sure you have everything you need right there in the laundry room. Don't spend extra time hunting down the stain remover - or even your glasses so you can read the washing directions on the tag.
Consider a rolling laundry station, which stores all of your products right there on the cart. It has two shelves that can hold your detergent, fabric softening sheets, etc. Use the other shelf to hold your folded linens or clothing. There is even a slide-out wire basket that can hold an extra pair of reading glasses, clothes pins or stain stick. The top of the cart is a flat melamine shelf where you can pretreat clothing. Open the shelf and it reveals a large, removable canvas bag that can hold the dirty laundry. The entire cart rolls through the house on casters. This steel-framed cart measures 18 by 26 by 31 inches.
Another version of the cart is more like a commercial laundry basket. It's a basket on wheels with a hanging clothing rod, like those you see in Laundromats. Now you can own your own. This easy-to-assemble laundry center features three removable mesh laundry bags, which can be used to hold whites, colors and heavy duty items. A hanging bar across the top gives you space to hang clothing as it comes out of the dryer. On top of the 72-inch high cart is a shelf where you can store folded items. The cart has heavy duty wheels that let you glide across any surface.
As simple as it sounds, try a set of drip dry hanging clothespin clips that let you air dry individual pieces of clothing. They are perfect for lingerie, which you don't want to melt in the dryer. Just attach a clip to the undies and hang it over a clothing rod to dry naturally. They are perfect for the hanging bar on your cart or even over the shower rod in the bathroom. They come in a set of five.
Use unused space
One of the best ways to fix up your laundry room is to make use of unused space.
Add a simple shelf over your washing machine and dryer for extra space. As simple as that sounds, it can make a big difference in your workspace. Instead of storing the laundry soap and fabric softener on top of the dryer, put the bottles on the shelf. You will have plenty of room to match socks or fold laundry on your appliances. This wire shelf is big enough to hold standard-sized bottles and boxes. It has a vinyl coated finish so it won't scratch your appliances. It measures 26 inches wide by 10 inches deep.
Is there a space between your washer and dryer? If there is even as little as 8 inches, you can tuck a roll-out laundry caddy between the two appliances that holds all over your products on its three shelves. Not only that, but there is also room for your iron, spray starch and some cleaning products, too. Made of sturdy melamine, the caddy measures 25 by 8 by 31 inches.
Get the family involved
One of the best ways to cut the time you spend doing laundry is to get the family involved. Let them sort their own laundry, or at least bring it down to get washed. Make it easy on them by supplying everyone with a canvas storage container to haul their laundry down to you. Each canvas bag has a water-resistant vinyl lining and sturdy handles. Each container measures 11 inches wide by 22 inches deep and 13 inches high.
If some family members are too little to haul down a canvas bag, then set up a triple storage bin in the laundry room and let the little ones bring their dirty clothes to you. This black frame cart is made of heavy duty steel. From it hang three removable bags that you can identify for sorting. Even a little child is capable of sorting whites from colors. And when the bag fills up, remove it and dump the load into the washer.
One final suggestion for making laundry less of a chore is to make your laundry room more pleasant and convenient. For instance, install a radio on one of those new shelves. Set up a portable phone on some of that newly acquired space. Paint the room a pleasant color. And instead of thinking of laundry as a chore, think of it as time you get to spend by yourself.
