How London Is Making Its Mark In Culinary Excellence

Traditionally, England is one of the lesser known culinary cities of the world

. Until recent years, it renown lay in its architecture, in its sites, in its excitement and in its culture, but never in its food. Today, though, it is a different story. London is fast becoming a city of culinary renown.

Over the course of the past ten to fifteen years many leading restaurants have emerged, with Michelin stars fast becoming the norm (although we have a long way to go until we catch up with those gastronomic masters: the French). Numerous restaurants have opened up in England's first city; many of which rival the best restaurants found across the world. If there was a reward for 'City of Best Culinary Improvement', then London would, without a doubt, have won the award for the last few years, easily. In fact, it is well within the scope of the city to declare itself a gastronomically advanced city that can count itself as one of the world's best.

Where We Excel

There is one area in which London is, hands down, winner, and that is in offering the widest range of foods within a single city. In Paris, for example, there are several Italian, Chinese, Korean, and various other styles of restaurant, however, the majority are French. This is unsurprising given the wonderful array of foods available in France, but it does not reflect an eclectic mix. England, with its less astounding national cuisine (beef, sausages and potatoes are probably our mainstay, oh, and a bit of fish and batter), is able to expand and adopt others' cuisine, without diluting its own culture (- we have very little of food culture to talk of, so we lose nothing). Various cities across the world adopt a similar stance to food, most notably New York, but London is by far the best at offering a truly diverse and cultured cuisine. In London you can eat Afghani, Zimbabwean, Australian, Thai, Malaysian, Dutch, Congolese, Vietnamese, and all the usual foods Chinese, Indian, Japanese, French, Italian as well as some off the wall types, such as Medieval, which is less the food of a culture than a space in time. However, you get the idea; in London we offer a huge range of foods.
