If you've lost your passport, you need to report the loss to the Department of State immediately, and you should apply for a replacement as soon as possible.

The length of time that it takes to replace a lost passport varies depending on what type of passport processing you use, which in turn depends on how badly you need to get it replaced. Here is a rundown of the different options you have for replacing a lost passport, along with the expected processing time for each:

Regular Processing

If you choose regular processing, you'll pay just the normal passport fees of $135 for a book only and $165 if you'd also like the optional passport card. Processing Time: 6 weeks or possibly longer, depending on how many applications the passport agency has to process.

Expedited Processing Through the Department of State

For expedited processing through the Department of State, follow the same steps for regular processing and simply request that your application to replace your lost passport be expedited. This will cost you an additional $60 expedite fee, plus the costs of overnight shipping to and from the passport agency.

Processing Time: 2-3 weeks, depending on the volume of applications the Passport Agency is dealing with at the moment.

Passport Agency Office

Passport agency offices are special passport offices for people who need a passport more quickly than standard expedited processing can provide. There are 21 of these offices in the US, and you have to make an appointment ahead of time to use them.

Passport Expediters

Private passport expediters are private companies that submit your application to the passport agency for you, sparing you the need to make an appointment at a passport agency office. Processing times vary-make sure you know what you're buying before you pay.
