Breaking up is hard to do. There is no doubt about that at all. Sometimes it seems like it will take forever to move on. This is usually the case when you weren't the one asking for the breakup but the one on the receiving end instead. The harder your heart breaks as a result of your breakup, the longer it's likely to take to be ready to move on.
However, there will come a point when it's just time to movesomewhere. You can't continue on in limbo for the rest of your life. Moving on after breaking up doesn't come easy but it shouldn't be impossible. You can't lock yourself away from the world and curl up in the fetal position waiting for the pain to go away.
That almost always proves to be infinitely more self-destructive than productive. It's one thing to take a day or two to get your bearings and deal with your emotions. The longer you wait to face the world though the harder it's going to be to get back out there.
But there is no time that's set in stone as far as limits go for moving on after a breakup. That's because it will be different for different people for different reasons. The longer the relationship lasted, the longer it should take to move on. You wouldn't start dating the next day after ending a marriage of 25 years or longer.
It will probably be a different story if it was a brief but intense relationship that lasted only six months or so. The pain of being dumped may be a bit intense at first but it's not the soul numbing, heart wrenching pain that will leave you feeling paralyzed and numb inside for months to come.
This is the way it should be. But one thing remains the same for many couples who are going through rough spots and breakups whether they've been together for 25 years or only six months. There is almost always someone in the relationship who wants a second chance to make your relationship work. As long as someone is willing to take action to save your relationship there is hope that it can be saved.
