This phrase isn't new. It applies to all industries including Digital Signage. When looking for a Digital Signage solution for a business, many users don't know where to begin looking. You can't find Digital Signage in the phonebook, so many people find themselves on Google. Here you'll find lots of the parts and pieces you'll need, but the not the answers to many of your questions. You'll find manufactures of software and hardware who will tell you they've got the right product for your deployment. But do they really?
There are several factors to consider when looking for Digital Signage and it's important to know what you want from your Digital Signage deployment.
- What's the message? For example: Content is the most important factor in the success of Digital Signage. However, content is sadly one of the most overlooked parts of a Digital Signage deployment.
- Who will be managing the content? The IT Department? Marketing? HR? This is important when deciding on the software.
These questions are important because the answers will determine what type of Digital Signage software is best for your business. There are three basic types of Digital Signage software.
- At the high end you have products that are extremely expensive, training intensive and hard to deploy. These are like running a TV station. You have to really want to do what they do to make it worth the cost.
- At the low end you have the "PowerPoint on Steroids" programs that are basically a PowerPoint scheduling plug-in. These are outgrown the day they are deployed.
- In the middle are the 80 percent solutions. Content rich, easy to deploy and manage.
Knowing what Digital Signage software will best fill your business needs is critical. It is also important to consider the software prior to purchasing the hardware. You don't want to find yourself in the position of finding Digital Software that will run on your hardware.
Working with a "true" Digital Signage Integrator, one who is experienced in software, hardware and content, will help you avoid the problem of "you got what you paid for!"
