How Marine Locks Work

Locks are used to move boats (Power and Sailboats) between bodies of water that have different levels

. This example, the Port Canaveral Lock will allow boats to traverse from the Banana River to the Atlantic Ocean.

As you approach a lock you should contact the lock-master via VHF radio, if you are a small vessel without a radio, some locks have a button located on a pole or column you can press to enter. The channel the lock-master monitors will vary from area to area. Look for a sign posted at the entrance of the lock with instructions as to how to contact the lock-master and proceed..

Always use caution as you approach any lock and pay attention to the "traffic signal" at the lock entrance. If the signal is red you should stay clear and keep an eye out for boats leaving the lock in your oncoming path. Once the gates to the lock entrance are fully open and all traffic has exited, the signal will turn green which is your indication that it is safe to enter the lock.

Before entering, you should set fenders on both sides of your boat and have lines ready at both the bow and the stern. Although some locks have lines available where they want you to tie up, some do not and you should be prepared and have your own lines ready, most likely you will need them.


Once you have entered the lock, you should take a wrap around a cleat on both the bow and stern and have a crew member ready. Once you secure your vessel, turn the engine off and if equipped, turn your radar off. Do not secure your vessel as if you are docking, the water levels are going to change and your boat must be allowed to rise and fall.


Once all boats are secured in the lock, and the gate that you entered is closed, the gate at the other end of the lock is opened slightly to allow water from the higher level into the lock in order to raise the boats in the lock to the new water level. (Or out, lowering the water level, depending on the direction you are traveling.) As the water level changes, the crew members on the lines on the bow and stern will have to adjust accordingly to allow the boat to rise or fall with the water level. You may experience a current pushing the boat around which is caused by the very strong incoming or leaving currents. A word of caution is to be sure your fenders are secure and that your rub rail is not sliding up the side of the lock.

When the lock is at its new level and the gates are opened completely. You can start your engine before releasing your lines or the lock-master takes back the lines. Once you are clear of the lines, follow the direction of the lock-master and exit slowly but at a speed to maintain forward control of your vessel. Always be cautious of other boat traffic which may be waiting to enter the lock from the other side. You should always wait your turn in exiting locks. Sailboats may be slow to get moving and it is a no wake zone regardless. Being patient prevents most problems in and around locks.

When you are finally clear and underway, take in the fenders and turn your radar on if applicable. Enjoy the day and happy sailing!
