How Motorists Can Save Fuel
If you're anything like me you've been watching the price of fuel with horror - it has been going up and up and it costs a fortune each time you fill your car's tank up. Unfortunately, this is likely to continue and probably get worse.
There's not a lot we can do about the cost of petrol/gas, but we can reduce the amount we need to use and so save ourselves money. I'm not talking about ditching the car and walking everywhere - there are lots of things we can do to use less fuel when travelling. This article is all about the simple things we can do that will make a real saving on our fuel bills.
The first place to start is with the car itself. Have you had it serviced regularly? This is important to keep the engine running efficiently, which in turn will mean it uses less fuel. Also, make sure that the tyres are all inflated correctly, as that can make a noticeable difference too.
Next, are you carrying things you don't need to that are just weighing the car down? I don't mean anything as drastic as pulling out the rear seats - but many people carry a lot in their boot that they don't really need. So have a look and see if you can cut down a little.
If you have a roof-rack, or anything else that reduces the streamlining of your car, then remove it when it's not needed. That can have a huge impact on fuel efficiency as the extra drag it creates means you need a lot more fuel to pull the car along.
Combine short trips, as cold starts use up lots of fuel. So rather than doing 3 small journeys during the day, is it possible to combine them into one?
Plan your journey so you go the most efficient route. That's not always the very shortest - motorways/freeways are often better than smaller roads where you need to start/stop a lot.
Don't keep your engine running more than is necessary. E.g. don't start the car until you're ready to go or leave it running when you're parked up - and if in a queue of traffic that doesn't look like it'll move for a few minutes then turn the engine off and save the fuel.
Try to drive as smoothly as possible. Accelerate slowly and try to anticipate traffic conditions up ahead so rather than braking you can just ease off the accelerator.
Keep to the speed limit - going slightly faster may only save a few minutes off the journey while it burns up far more fuel. Just leave a few minutes earlier and then there'll be no rush.
Finally, turn off anything you don't need, such as air-conditioning, heaters, lights, etc. Many people keep their air-conditioning on all the time when they'd not notice if it was off.
If you try at least some of these tips then you should notice that your miles per gallon (mpg) increases, which means less fuel. Over the course of a year that should make a significant saving on your fuel bill.
