How Much Does It Cost To Ship From The Us To Toronto?

Many US companies of all shapes and sizes do business with customers in Toronto on a regular basis

. Being larger than all but a handful of US cities, Toronto is obviously a major business center, and one that many Americans see as a logical place to try and expand their business to. This is especially true because for many Americans, Toronto may be much closer than other American cities of a similar size. If you're using a Boston delivery company to ship to Toronto though, you need to stop and think for a moment about the extra fees that you might have to deal with as a result of shipping to Canada.

Even though Toronto might be much closer than LA to Boston, there are a handful of extra fees that you're going to have to worry about any time you're making an international shipment, even to a city as close as Toronto. There are actually fewer fees involved in shipping to Canada than to some other countries due to our trade agreements, but there are still some guidelines that you need to be aware of.

First of all, any time you're shipping to Canada, you're going to have to pay the Canadian tax on the value of the goods that you're shipping into that country. The taxes are different in every province in Canada, but since Toronto is in Ontario we'll only look at their tax situation. In Canada, there is a 5% general goods and services tax which applies to almost everything you ship into the country. In Ontario, there is also an 8% tax which applies to most retail goods, although there are exceptions. However, as of summer 2010, the laws will be changing and these two taxes will be combined into a single HST (harmonized sales tax) of 13%.

Whenever you ship into another country, Even Canada, you're also going to have to pay a brokerage fee in order to get your shipment across the border. Courier companies have a helpful tip for that problem though. Since you're charged per shipment, always try to make larger single shipments rather than smaller individual ones.

Other fees are going to be totally determined by what you are shipping. You may need certain permits or licenses to move certain types of goods, but those are the types of fees which you'll have to discuss in detail with your courier or shipping consultant.
