How Much Does PAT Testing Cost?
Portable Appliance Testing is required within your business to ensure that all of
your portable electrical devices are safe and fit for use by you and your employees. As health and safety regulations insist that all portable devices should be regularly inspected, PAT testing is something that you will need to do. The question then is how much will it cost? It would be impossible to provide you with an accurate assessment for the cost of your PAT testing needs, but the following information will provide you with all you need to know to make a best guess at the cost.
What Is a Portable Appliance?
The main factor that will determine how much your Portable Appliance Testing will cost is how many portable appliances your organisation actually has. To be able to assess how many appliances you have, you first need to understand exactly what classes as a portable electrical appliance.
Essentially a portable appliance is anything that comes with the plug, but that can be moved around. Let's take a computer as an example; not only will the computer itself need testing, but also the monitor, the speakers, the printer, even the extension cable. Each of these items would be classed as a separate appliance. As you walk from room to room within your building you should be able to calculate a rough idea of the number of appliances that will need to be tested.
What Will It Cost per Appliance?
The cost per appliance of your PAT testing will vary depending on the company doing the testing. You can usually expect to pay between 1 and 2 for every piece of equipment but this really does vary from place to place. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay less per appliance for a greater number of total appliances that require testing.
You should be aware that if you have only a few appliances that require testing, you may still be required to pay a standard callout charge, or a set minimum amount.
How to Instruct a PAT Testing Company
For a PAT testing company to provide you with a quote they will need to know how many appliances there are to be tested. An estimate will suffice if you have a particularly large amount of appliances, however this estimate should be as accurate as possible. The greater the accuracy, the more likely you are to receive an accurate quote for the work that needs to be completed. If you overestimate, you may find that you are overcharged. However if you underestimate, you could be left with some items that go untested, as the company will need to move onto their next client.
PAT testing companies expect you to ask for a quote before choosing them for your needs, so don't be afraid to get prices from different organisations. You may also be able to save a bundle with promotional offers that some companies will run from time to time.
