How Non-Profits Can Manage Their Brands Online


It is great to know that your charity is online and doing all it can to be involved with the online world. Making sure that your charity is managed correctly online and spoken about in a favorable manner is another thing. It can be hard to know exactly what is going on with what others think of your charity. Good thing that there is ways to now track all of this information and look it over in a digestible manner.

Where do we start?

First steps is getting your company setup with a Reader account. There are a couple different ones on the market, but if more than one person is planning on reading over the information it would be a good idea to get one that is web based. The best one for this job is Google Reader. What a Reader does is imports all kinds of content from all different types of sources using the RSS capabilities from most blogs and websites online. It will also import any videos, tweets, podcasts etc. Think of it as the bucket that catches everything that you tell it to.


How it works is once you have your Reader setup you will want to go another great Google product called Google Alerts. What Google Alerts does is...alerts you of whatever and whenever someone is talking about certain keywords that you tell it to online. For example it would be a good idea to setup Alerts for your organization name, your employees, your causes that you are passionate about or any other events that might be happening online or offline that your organization might be apart of.

Once you have all of the Alerts setup and you are managing where your name and other information is being talked about online, it is now time to get involved where you are allowed to get involved. For example, if someone wrote a blog post about your last silent auction or gala event, you will want to go to their blog and leave a comment, get in and talk to them and the people that are apart of their blogs conversation. It will be beneficial because people will be able to ask you questions directly if you are already talking to them directly on their blog. You can do this by subscribing to the comments by again....your Reader. People will be so surprised when they see that you are constantly responding to their questions and getting involved, it can only help your organizations reputation.

I have too much stuff in my reader!

This can happen and your reader can get pretty stuffed up and overloaded if you don't organize it correctly. Organization is the most important skill that you can possess online if you want to be able to stay on top of the curve and still have a life. So what you will need to do is make folders for your RSS feeds that are coming into your Reader. It would be recommended to make different folders for your Alerts like the following:

1. Company Alerts

2. Employee Alerts

3. Cause

4. Subscribed comments

5. Subscribed forum posts

6. Subscribed videos

Another advantage of setting everything up into folders is that you will not have to search to see if there is a new Alert for any of the keywords inside the folder. If there is it will be bold and have a number next to it. If not then there w
