How Non-ferrous Metal Castings Are Made
We all know that metal is a chief proponent to numerous structures and fixtures

When it occurs, a foundry uses a furnace to burn the items and melt them before eventually molding them. Inside the furnace is a series of chambers where the metal is processed continually until you have the finished product.
Melting the Metal- The raw materials are entered into the furnace, where the temperature ranges from 327 to 3600 degrees Celsius depending on their composition. Soft alloys, like tin and zinc, do not require too much heat to melt, while nickel and titanium need more than a thousand degrees. Several types of furnaces are used by foundries to perfectly suit the properties of alloys.
Degassing Liquid Metal- This step is important, because hydrogen can affect the overall properties of the metal. Knowing this a foundry will utilize a hydrogen reduction process. Keep in mind this is normally done by the furnaces since they can measure hydrogen levels. If there is too much then you can extract it from the liquefied alloy.
Creating the Mould- A mould is an encasement that the liquid metal will take the shape of when hardened. Metal and/or bronze castings are used to form the moulds. Initially drafts are created, so mistakes are avoided. Remember, there is very little room for error in mould making, as a slight misjudgement can totally mar the finished product. Precision is of the essence.
Pouring the Liquid Metal- This is a tedious step that occurs once the moulds have been created. Some companies have problems keeping the liquid metal from spilling over, but if you use specialized mechanisms like robots or interconnected chambers, they both will help.
Cleaning the Metal Once it's Hardened- When the time comes to clean the metal, it's important to make sure this is done properly. You don't want components like sand, casting heads or risers to be present. These are taken care of manually, but with the use of powerful cutting tools. However, if you have an advanced furnace they will most likely have cutting devices built-in to them. These are used to strip off the products excesses.
The Finish- When the cleaning process is complete the metal items will still look raw. In order to get the perfect look there must be one final process...the finish. Once this takes place the items are cut, polished and refined. This will continue until the products are created.
When you look at each foundry out there today they all need metal castings so they can offer the right moulding applications. There are tons of different shapes, sizes, and functions. The majority of them are concerned with the moulding, but there are others that are specifically used to support the furnace. It all depends on the nature of the business and how they plan to use non ferrous metals. This is especially true if metal fixtures are needed with specific dimensions and features.
