How Not To Be Involved In A Traffic Accident

Thousands of traffic accidents occur on roads in Britain every day

, and although it may be impossible to completely avoid an accident, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent it.

1.Never drive when you are tired, particularly at night. Hundreds of accidents are caused every week by drivers who embark on long journeys or short trips when they are tired. If you are suffering from fatigue, you concentration will suffer which is dangerous for you and for other road users.

2.Always avoid road rage. If another driver nearly causes an accident, or cuts you up, let him pass. There is no point avoiding one accident and causing another, by either provoking another driver or tailgating him.

3.Never exceed the speed limit. Limits are set for a reason, and if you drive too fast you are likely to cause an accident. If the car in front of you stops unexpectedly, or if there are road works or an accident ahead on the road, and you are speeding, you will find it difficult to slow down in time. A speeding car is also difficult to control if you clip a kerb or slip on a wet road surface.

4.If a car is covered in dents, with scratched bodywork, the driver is more likely to be inattentive. If you notice a driver weaving between lanes, or driving erratically, keep out of the way so as to avoid an accident.

5.Always make sure your car is well maintained. Take it for a 12 month service with a qualified mechanic, and do regular checks on tyres, lights, brakes and indicators yourself. Oil and water must also be checked regularly, particularly if your vehicle is over 4 years old.

6.Always make sure your head restraint is adjusted to the proper position. This may not prevent an accident, but it will lessen the impact if you are involved in an accident, and it will cushion your head and neck. Restraints should be level with the top of your head.

7.Always keep your distance from the car in front. If they stop quickly you will not be able to stop.

8.Distractions while driving cause many accidents. It has been reported that drivers who use mobile phone while driving, even with a hands free kit, are four times more likely to have an accident. If you want to eat or drink, pull over in a safe spot.

9.Blind spots are often the cause of road accidents. When drivers claim that they didnt see you they usually mean they didnt look properly. Adjust your rear view mirrors and your side mirrors to give you the best possible view of the traffic behind you and at the side of you. Always look over your shoulder to ensure there are no vehicles at the side of you before you manoeuvre. If you are travelling on a motorway, beware of lorries, whose drivers will not be able to see your vehicle easily if you are travelling beside them.

10.Always keep two hands on the wheel. Driving with one hand on the wheel can cause all sorts of problems if you are involved in an accident, as you will not be able to control your vehicle properly.

Personal Injury solicitors deal with thousands of cases of road traffic accident compensation claims each year, and if you think you may have a claim, you should contact a no win, no fee solicitor who will give you a free claim assessment.
