How Not to Use Twitter

Here are some tips for what to avoid when using Twitter.

Don't follow more people than follow you. Use friendorfollow to see who is following you and make sure that you keep a healthy ratio. You may think that by following a bunch of people, they will automatically follow you. While a handful might, the majority won't, and in the end you will only look desperate and aggressivein a spammy kind of way. That's not going to help get more visitors to your website at all.

Don't just tweet, retweet and link to your own web pages. Twitter is about community, and that means reading other tweets, commenting on them, and engaging in actual conversations. The more you become a part of the community, the more you, your opinion, and you product will be trusted. Once you have a solid list, you can drop in the occasional bit of self-promotion at times when it seems appropriate.

Don't ignore those people who reply to you. Not only is it rude, but it also means that you miss an opportunity to build connections. Even if the comments are unjustifiably negative, it gives you a chance to politely and professionally thank them for their feedback, which makes you look gracious and responsive.

Don't get political. If you have a business website and start a Twitter feed that's unrelated to politics, you risk alienating some of your followersor sparking a discussion that will only distract from your business. While it's okay to weave in some personal information into your tweets, you should never risk antagonizing your list by posting incendiary words.

Don't post anything negative about competitors or people who have said something unkind about your business or product. There's no advantage to it. The result will be either a flame war in which neither side wins, or a flurry of exchanges followed by a standoff. In either case, you won't have won many new visitors to your free website.

Don't post minute-by-minute updates of the minutiae of your daily life. Whether yours is a personal website or a business one, post only when you have something relevant to say; this holds doubly true for business websites. By posting an endless stream of consciousness, you'll rapidly lose what followers you have: and even worse, those posts that are genuinely valuable will get lost in the mix.

Don't post several entries back-to-back-to-back, and then log out for the day. While it can be tempting to get your "quota" in for the day all in one batch, it will feel like spamming. Do your best to check in at least several times throughout the day.

Don't use auto-DMs. Auto DMs are a feature that allow you to send automated direct messages when someone follows your account. It may sound like a convenient time saver, but the reality is, no one likes them. Even innocuous ones feel impersonal, and you risk turning off a new follower by using this feature.

Don't make light of a recent world event to shamelessly promote your business or brand. Call this the "Kenneth Cole" rule: trying to get cute with national events will only get you into trouble. Coming across as opportunistic damages your brand and your following.

Don't try to sell your product directly through Twitter. You're not going to convince anyone to go to your ecommerce website and buy in 140 characters, and you'll turn off people who are interested in communicatingwhich, unless you're a business-to-business company, is probably your client base.

By using Twitter as it was intendedto build connections between peopleyou can help generate traffic to your free website and strengthen your brand at the same time.
