How Often Do You Really Have To Change Your Oil?

How often do you find yourself at an Auto repair shop in Austin

, Texas? Do you really have to change your oil every three months or 3,000 miles? Read online and you'll get a excess of information. Listen to online radio car talk shows and you get conflicting information. So, what is the answer to this question plaguing the universe?

Online the range is from 3,000 miles to once a year. Yahoo recommends once a year or every 7,500 miles for passenger cars and smaller trucks. They recommend changing oil every 3,000 miles for diesel engines and turbocharged gasoline engines.

They extract their logic from the vehicle manufactures recommendation. The only glitch they discover upon reading the fine print is that those are the recommendations under "ideal" driving conditions. What we think of is "normal" the manufacturers, unfortunately consider "severe". So, if you happen to be the preverbal grandmother who only drives her car to church on Sunday and once a week to the hair salon and grocery store, go ahead and change your oil once a year.

For the rest of you, every 3,000 miles is the standard recommendation. In addition, a new engine can run for 7,500 miles between changes but as the car accumulates miles, oil breaks down faster requiring more frequent changing.

If oil isn't changed often enough as the car ages, accelerated wear occurs and problems associated with the engine ensue. If you live where it is cold, if you make frequent stops, if you drive in dusty conditions, if you sustain highway driving during hot conditions all these add to the breakdown of the oil and you need more frequent oil changes.

Auto repair in Austin, Texas is just part of owning a car. The syndicated Car Talk on National Public Radio recommends changing your oil every 5,000 miles. They do admit that changing your oil is not an exact science and state, "It may be too soon for many people and too late for a few, but for the vast majority, 5,000-mile oil change will help your engine last to a ripe, old age". They do recommend that you follow your owner's manual though.

A couple of other points that Tom and Ray point out from Car talk is to always change the filter when changing the oil. The old filter has contaminates on it that will "gunk" up the new oil. They also suggest checking the oil levels every few hundred miles, but never over fill, as that can cause serious engine problems.

The conclusion is-read your owners manual. Change your oil according to your driving conditions and change your oil at least every 5,000 miles if not 3,000 miles.
