Driving in bad conditions can throw off your alignment. Additionally, having your vehicle parked at anything other than 100% flat conditions can cause additional pressure on side of the vehicle rather than the other.

When you go in for a wheel alignment, they will check to see that all of the wheels are aligned to point straight ahead. If one or more of the wheels are turning in a different direction, there is a problem. It can be fixed easily enough by a skilled mechanic. If caught early enough, it will mean a simple correction. If it takes longer to get noticed, it can lead to other major problems in the drive train as well as problems in other parts of the vehicle.

On the more expensive end, you could end up throwing rods or damaging camshafts. It is better to simply get the alignment when you get the chance.
